Help defend and protect LGBTQ+ rights in Tanzania

Annual Impact Report 2025

By Maria Mudenda | Advocacy and Fundraising Manager

Summary

In 2025, LGBT Voice Tanzania continued to provide critical protection and support to LGBTQ individuals living in a highly restrictive and increasingly hostile environment. With support from individual donors through GlobalGiving and additional funding partners, the organization assisted an estimated 637 people facing legal, social, and safety-related risks.

Despite worsening conditions for LGBTQ communities in Tanzania, LGBT Voice Tanzania maintained emergency response services, legal and psychosocial support, and community-based protection efforts. This work ensured that individuals in crisis were not left without support when formal systems failed to protect them.

What We Did in 2025

With funding from GlobalGiving donors (USD 7,839) and other sources (USD 3,567), LGBT Voice Tanzania focused on four core areas of intervention:

1. Emergency Safety and Crisis Support

The organization responded to urgent cases involving threats of arrest, eviction, violence, and homelessness. Support included:

  • Temporary safe accommodation or relocation assistance

  • Emergency subsistence support

  • Safety planning and follow-up through trusted networks

These interventions helped prevent further harm and stabilized individuals during moments of acute risk.

2. Legal Support and Rights Information

LGBT Voice Tanzania provided informal legal assistance and referrals to help individuals navigate encounters with authorities and understand their rights. This included:

  • Legal information and guidance

  • Support during police-related incidents

  • Referrals to trusted legal actors where safe and appropriate

Given the risks of formal legal action, the focus remained on harm reduction and prevention.

3. Psychosocial and Well-Being Support

Many LGBTQ individuals experience long-term stress, fear, and isolation due to stigma and criminalization. In 2025, the organization supported well-being through:

  • Peer-based emotional support

  • Referrals to LGBTQ-friendly counselors and health providers

  • Follow-up support for individuals experiencing distress

Access to affirming support contributed to improved emotional stability and resilience.

4. Community Trust and Protection Networks

Beyond individual cases, LGBT Voice Tanzania invested in maintaining trust within LGBTQ communities. By working discreetly and consistently, the organization strengthened informal support networks that enable early warning, mutual aid, and safer referrals.

Why This Matters

Tanzania remains a challenging environment for LGBTQ people. Same-sex relationships are criminalized, and public stigma continues to limit access to justice, healthcare, housing, and family support. In 2025, LGBT Voice Tanzania observed a further deterioration in the operating environment, increasing fear and vulnerability within the community.

In this context, donor support made a direct difference. Contributions helped ensure that LGBTQ individuals had access to safety, information, and care when they needed it most. While exact numbers are difficult to document safely, the estimated 637 people supported represent real lives stabilized and harm prevented.

Financial Overview

In 2025, LGBT Voice Tanzania managed USD 11,406 in support of LGBTQ protection work:

  • USD 7,839 from GlobalGiving donors

  • USD 3,567 from other funding sources

Funds were used primarily for direct program support, including emergency assistance, legal and psychosocial support, and essential operational costs required to deliver services safely.

Challenges We Faced

  • Increasing hostility and reduced civic space made outreach and documentation more difficult

  • High demand for support exceeded available resources

  • Safety considerations limited the use of detailed monitoring tools

Despite these challenges, the organization adapted its approaches to continue supporting those most at risk.

What’s Next (2026 Priorities)

In 2026, LGBT Voice Tanzania plans to:

  • Strengthen emergency response and protection pathways

  • Improve safe and ethical documentation of impact

  • Deepen engagement with individual donors and allies

  • Prepare for future advocacy opportunities when conditions allow

Continued donor support will be essential to sustaining this work.
