Because of You, 120 LGBTQ+ People Found Safety, Healing, and Hope

Dear Friends,

Thank you for standing with LGBT Voice Tanzania.

Your generosity through GlobalGiving continues to provide a lifeline to LGBTQ+ people across Tanzania who face discrimination, violence, homelessness, family rejection, and barriers to accessing justice and mental health services. Every donation, regardless of its size, enables us to respond when individuals have nowhere else to turn.

Over the past three months, your support has helped us deliver critical services across Dar es Salaam, Tanga, Kagera, and Iringa, ensuring that vulnerable community members received protection, counselling, and legal assistance when they needed it most.

Between April and July 2026, we directly supported 120 LGBTQ+ individuals through our three core programmes:

  • 20 individuals received legal support.
  • 94 individuals received trauma counselling and psychosocial support.
  • 6 individuals received emergency shelter and crisis assistance.

Behind every number is a person whose life was changed because compassionate people like you chose to help.

Legal Support: Defending Rights and Restoring Dignity

Many LGBTQ+ people in Tanzania continue to experience arbitrary arrests, blackmail, discrimination, family conflict, eviction, and violations of their fundamental rights. Fear of stigma often prevents survivors from seeking legal assistance, allowing abuses to go unchallenged.

During this reporting period, your donations enabled LGBT Voice Tanzania to provide legal support to 20 individuals.

Our legal interventions included confidential legal consultations, documentation of human rights violations, referrals to trusted legal professionals, guidance on available legal options, and advocacy to help individuals navigate difficult situations safely.

For many beneficiaries, this support represented their first opportunity to understand their rights and receive professional assistance without fear of judgment.

Every legal case required patience, confidentiality, and careful coordination to prioritize the safety of those involved. Although legal victories are not always immediate, each intervention strengthens access to justice and helps individuals regain confidence in their ability to seek protection.

Trauma Counselling: Supporting Recovery Beyond the Crisis

Violence and discrimination often leave lasting emotional scars. Many LGBTQ+ people seeking our support experience anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, and profound isolation after being rejected by families, threatened within their communities, or subjected to abuse.

Thanks to your support, 94 individuals accessed trauma counselling and psychosocial support over the past three months.

Our trained counsellors provided confidential, trauma-informed services that helped participants process painful experiences, develop healthy coping strategies, strengthen resilience, and reconnect with hope.

Counselling sessions addressed issues including:

  • Recovery after violence and discrimination.
  • Family rejection and social isolation.
  • Anxiety, depression, and emotional distress.
  • Safety planning during periods of crisis.
  • Referrals to healthcare and additional support services where appropriate.

One young participant came to us after being forced to leave home because of their sexual orientation. With nowhere to stay and overwhelmed by fear and uncertainty, they struggled to see a future.

Through ongoing counselling, safety planning, and referrals to supportive community networks, they gradually regained confidence and emotional stability.

After several weeks, they told our counsellor:

"I thought I had lost everything. Instead, I found people who reminded me that my life still matters."

Moments like these remind us that healing begins when someone feels seen, heard, and supported.

Emergency Shelter and Crisis Response: Protecting Lives

When LGBTQ+ individuals face immediate danger, rapid intervention can be lifesaving.

Throughout this reporting period, LGBT Voice Tanzania provided emergency shelter and crisis assistance to six individuals experiencing urgent threats to their safety.

These emergencies included violence, forced eviction, family rejection, and situations where remaining in their current environment placed them at immediate risk.

Support included temporary safe accommodation, transportation to safer locations, coordination with trusted partners, emergency basic needs, and referrals to legal and healthcare services.

Each emergency required swift action, careful risk assessment, and a survivor-centred approach that respected confidentiality and personal dignity.

Although emergency cases represented only a small proportion of our work, they required significant organizational resources and immediate coordination to ensure every individual reached safety.

Your Support in Action

Every contribution made through GlobalGiving helped sustain these essential services.

Your donations supported counselling sessions for survivors recovering from trauma, legal assistance for individuals seeking justice, emergency shelter for those facing immediate danger, transportation costs, communication with beneficiaries, and the coordination necessary to reach communities across multiple regions of Tanzania.

This work would not have been possible without your trust and generosity.

By investing in LGBT Voice Tanzania, you are investing in protection, healing, dignity, and hope.

Challenges We Continue to Face

While we are proud of what was achieved during this reporting period, the need continues to grow.

Each month we receive new requests for emergency shelter, legal assistance, counselling, and crisis support. Unfortunately, our resources do not always match the increasing demand.

Providing individualized legal services, trauma-informed counselling, and emergency protection requires trained personnel, transportation, safe accommodation, communication, and operational capacity. These essential services remain difficult to sustain without consistent donor support.

Despite these challenges, our team remains committed to ensuring that every available resource reaches those facing the greatest risks.

Looking Ahead

Over the coming months, LGBT Voice Tanzania will continue strengthening access to legal protection, expanding trauma counselling services, and improving emergency response for LGBTQ+ individuals across Tanzania.

We are also working to strengthen referral networks with healthcare providers, legal professionals, and community partners so that individuals can access comprehensive support more quickly during times of crisis.

Our goal is simple: to ensure that no LGBTQ+ person facing violence, discrimination, or homelessness has to navigate those experiences alone.

Thank You

Everything described in this report was made possible because individuals around the world chose to care.

Your generosity has provided more than financial support. It has given people the opportunity to seek justice, begin healing from trauma, and find safety during moments of crisis.

As our work continues, so does the need. LGBT Voice Tanzania relies almost entirely on the generosity of people like you to sustain these life-saving services.

If you are able to continue supporting this work, your next contribution—no matter the amount—will help ensure that another person facing fear, violence, or rejection can find protection, compassion, and hope.

Thank you for believing in a future where every LGBTQ+ person in Tanzania can live with dignity, safety, and equal opportunity.

With sincere gratitude,
