We are excited to bring to you these updates, Tanzania is a member and a subscriber of the United Nations Human Rights Declaration, but our government does not comply with its international human rights obligations, and provides no protection against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. In addition, homosexuality is criminalized in sections 154-157 of the penal code, and the state does not recognize marriage equality rights for all couples, regardless of sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
The failure of our government to protect the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender individuals in Tanzania they continually face significant challenges especially interacting with the law enforcers. Because homosexuality is criminalized, the law enforcers harass and demean LGBTQ people with impunity. In order to charge a person with violating the law criminalizing homosexual conduct, the police must catch an individual in (or attempting) the sex act a rare occurrence. Due to this obstacle to formal prosecution, police harass LGBTQ individuals as an informal means of punishment.
There is a possibility of introducing harsh punishments as a new anti-LGBT legislation was introduced in parliament with a propose restricting the rights of homosexuals in Tanzania. This makes it very difficult for LGBT activists, organizations and groups to access resources to run advocacy campaigns and also obtain legal services especially filling cases in court to seek justice.
That is why we introduced this project so that we can be able to bring new resources and new opportunities to support local activists as a key to the expansion, rejuvenation and sustainability of LGBTQ's movements and organizations, both now and in the future.
Currently there about 39 groups representing Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer people nationwide but they do not have resources to speeding the fight against homophobia and Transphobia that is increasing in our community; and making Tanzania better and safer for millions of LGBTQ people, obtaining resources will fill the gap and provide more access to fundamental human rights and equal access without discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation
Kindly consider making a donation to support this only LGBTQ rights Support Fund which focuses exclusively on supporting national LGBTQ activism to advance social justice
