Simple happiness

By Rut Roman | Project leader

Steering towards the future
Steering towards the future

We have a confession to make: we've stopped reading the news, we don't own a tv, so we are not aware of current events. We have the general perception that climate change, economic and social inequity and the violent clashes of corporate interests floo the world map.

Sometimes, in this tiny remote fishing village, in conversation with friends that visit us, the topic comes up: “is happiness possible in a world of injustice, corruption, and indifference towards others suffering?''.  It may sound naive, but somehow this project has turned out to be something like a magnet for happiness. The Library's everyday activities happen because of beautiful people who care, who are willing to work every day without monetary compensation; people who work in the hope of bettering the life of the younger ones who come after us.  We work with men and women who embody kindness, gender respecting examples, who are concerned about young people and want to befriend them through the  decisive turns they must take in their lives.

So, yes this is a happy place, not all is perfect, not all our efforts and energy produce the desired results. Success can’t ever be a closed deal, it's the constant effort that counts. It's that clear and simple. We know we cannot change the world, we cannot be accountable for everybody's doings, but we can certainly try to work in the corner of the world where we’ve decided to settle. We must take interest in our neighbors' fate in those closest to us.  We must look for those who do that, team up with them.

Over the years more than 180 young, and not so young, people have come by. And they’re wonderful, they’re full of enthusiasm and brilliance. When we are tired and dismayed by the enormity of the task at hand, they come along and perk us up again, and up we go.  And then after 5 or 6 months, there’s another badge of wonderful young people who come along.

And then,  there’s you guys, the monthly donors who for years and years, keep on sending $15, $25 or more. Or the new collaborators that find us through social media, or word of mouth, or those who come by, you keep on supporting this stake for happiness.

This morning, I called a young professional who was part of the state government. I called him because I need his assessment on a project we want to present to the MInistry of Sports. We want to expand our Library in the face of teenage pregnancy rates,  we want to offer young people more space to explore sports, arts and other activities that will channel their time and energy toward formative activities.  So I called with technical questions about the certification process.  And he sadly told me, he was no longer part of the Sports Ministry, he had returned to the private sector.  He insisted I should keep calling for his advice, he said:  “I am proud and honored to work along with your organization I know what you’re doing, I’ve seen it and I heard from reliable sources the wonderful project you are leading”  That makes us happy, it is very often we hear:

  • “I really believe in what you are doing. I'd like to be part of it, how can I help?”

So, for us, happiness can be defined as being in a journey with people that have the same purpose, the hope, the willingness, the empathy to care for each other, for others, to bring along the younger, the most vulnerable, help them grow, make them happy.

That’s it:  purpose and commitment.  So thank you again, for being one of those happy people that are on board with us.
