Thank you for your generous contribution to the Libya Flood Relief Fund. Your donations continue to make a difference, ensuring that communities affected by last year’s devastating flood have access to food, medical care, and so much more.

Even as the cameras and headlines have moved on, your donation continues to sustain communities and organizations on the ground in Libya during times of great struggle, like during the deadliest Mediterranean tropical-like cyclone in recorded history. Storm Daniel and the subsequent flooding caused at least 4,333 deaths and displaced thousands.

The disaster coupled with Libya’s ongoing civil war, political instability, and extreme limitations on aid group’s  ability  to operate in-country meant the vast majority of those displaced by last year’s flooding remained displaced through the winter. Temperatures dropped, yet the quality of housing, food, water, and medical care remained the same for many.

Bearing these circumstances in mind, GlobalGiving’s responding team members faced a unique challenge and opportunity: To support our international partners in providing essential services, while also working tirelessly to connect with, vet, and onboard community-based Libyan organizations into the GlobalGiving partner network and provide them urgent support.

We are proud to mobilize your donations to support local response efforts led by Libyans and to support the ongoing responses of all our internationally-based partners still hard at work.

Here is a short description of some of the critical work you’ve supported since our last report:

    • Movement of Boy Scout and Girl Guides of Libya is a new GlobalGiving partner and member of the Worldwide Association of Boy and Girl Scouts, which has been present in Libya since 1954. The team’s deep roots make it possible to foster a team of Libyan scouts and guides who can act swiftly in times of conflict and disaster. Their team is well-versed in the local context, and knowledgeable on which resources to mobilize and connections to call upon for search and rescue efforts, the rapid distribution of medical supplies to emergency operating facilities, the supplying of water and support to the unhoused, and so much more. With your support, the Scouts are hard at work at the Derna Crisis Center supporting drainage operations, search and recovery efforts, and dignified burials of those who lost their lives in last year’s flooding.
    • Libya in the UK formed organically in 2017 as Libyans gathered together to foster a sense of community and home while living in the UK. Our team was excited to onboard Libya in the UK onto the GlobalGiving platform in (WHEN) to support their impressive networks in both Libya and the UK.  Teaming up with the Libyan Scouts and the Libyan Red Crescent, their youth-led teams gathered the funds needed for re-housing, reconstruction, and medical care after the floods in their home country and cities of Tripoli, Derna, and Benghazi.

But the inspired action doesn’t stop there! In addition to these new partners, your donations also provide ongoing support to trusted GlobalGiving partner organizations still on the ground and supporting communities in Libya. These include:

…and we’re just getting started! Your support of the GlobalGiving Libya Flood Relief Fund powers community-led responses in communities where it’s needed most. That means our partners get the critical resources they need when they need them. We can’t say it enough: Thank you!

With gratitude,

Amelia + the GlobalGiving Team

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
