Japan Heart provides free, life-saving surgeries for pediatric cancer patients in Cambodia. Every year Japan Heart treats 60 children with solid-type abdominal tumors and our hospital is the only place in the country where this type of surgery is available. Japan Heart provides the full treatment cost, including travel, accommodation and food for their accompanying family over our precious patients' long hospitalizations.
In Cambodia, the number of patients with pediatric cancer is thought to be 600 cases per year, of which only 200 recieve medical treatments. As a result, the survival rate is 20% whereas in developed countries is 80%. One of the barriers to treatment for pediatric cancer is that their families cannot afford to to pay for the care. Even if, they ae able to go to the hospital, the treatment is often ineffective due to a lack of knowledge or skills related to pediatric cancers.
Pediatric cancer is a major issue in Cambodia, with a shortage of skilled healthcare professionals. To address this, we invite highly-skilled pediatric surgeons from Japan to provide free surgeries and treatment. These experts also train local doctors, building their skills for long-term care. Through this initiative, we aim to raise awareness, enhance local medical capacity, and eventually reduce the impact of pediatric cancer in Cambodia.
In the future, local healthcare workers will be well-trained and sufficient to provide the necessary care for pediatric cancer patients. Through dedicated training programs and a solid healthcare system, we can ensure that children and infants receive the proper treatment before it's too late. By empowering local professionals, we are giving hope and the chance for a healthier future to those who need it most.
