Dear Friend,
During my recent visit to Kabul (February 2024) I took time to meet the patients at the health facility. My attention was taken by a girl who seemed to be from a relativly poor familiy. Her cheeks rose, her lips in a smile, her dark eyes showed the pain. I went forward to speak with her, but she was so shy that hide behind her mother. I asked the mother if I could ask some questions and take some pictures. She said "yes".
I quickly got my pen and notebook to note her words. Here is a short interview with a mother who brought her daughter for treatment. I would love to share it here so that you could also hear what the needs for the helth facility is from the perspective of a patient who trusts the doctors and benefited from the services of the health facility for a few years.
The names were replaced for the security reasons:
"My name is Amena, and I reside in Qasaba with my family. We moved here from Kapisa province three years ago so my husband could work at a nearby brick-making factory. I have six children, with my eldest being Mahwash, who is 12 years old.
Today, I brought Mahwash to the clinic because she has been experiencing abdominal and back pain. After some lab tests, the doctor mentioned the possibility of a kidney problem and recommended an ultrasound. We are grateful for the health services available in our district, as traveling to the city center would have been difficult for us.
While the clinic staff are skilled and dedicated, it is clear that the clinic's equipment is outdated and old. Better diagnostic tools are needed to effectively address patients' problems. Many pregnant women from our area rely on this clinic for prenatal care due to financial constraints preventing them from accessing private clinics with advanced ultrasound and CT scan machines. While we can only dream of such high-quality equipment, having a better ultrasound machine at our clinic would greatly benefit us all."
We at AfD very much appreciate your contribution to the program and to keep on provision of quality health services.
Kind regards,
