Further steps in improving maternal health

The inauguration of the maternity ward at the Comprehensive Health Center (CHC) in northern Kabul has had a profound impact on maternal health in the region. Afghanistan, with one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world - 638 deaths per 100,000 births in 2021 - has long faced a critical gap in access to quality healthcare, particularly for women, many of whom have limited or no access to professional medical services. The maternity ward, opened by Action for Development, plays a crucial role in addressing this gap, supporting women living in precarious conditions, often earning less than $2 per day, and contributing to the reduction of maternal morbidity and mortality rates.

Since its construction in May 2024, two experienced midwives has been hired joining our existing team of two midwives and one gynecologist (making a total of 5 persons), ensuring that skilled professionals are available to support deliveries and provide essential care. Since opening its doors in August, the maternity ward has been fully equipped for safe childbirth. In addition to providing a safe environment for deliveries, the maternity ward also offers antenatal and postnatal care. During this quarter over 450 mothers received mother and child care at the health facility (including pre and post natal, child-delivery and family planning services).

These services help guide women through their pregnancy journeys with the expertise of trained healthcare professionals, ensuring that both mother and child are monitored throughout each stage. The ward also provides access to family planning services, enabling women to make informed choices about their reproductive health. In addition, the necessary medicines are offered at a reduced price to make them affordable for women in the most economically disadvantaged situations. In the most critical cases, essential medicines are provided at a discounted rate or completely free of charge (to the vulnerable families who have an exemption card), ensuring that no woman is turned away due to financial hardship. This comprehensive approach ensures that women receive continuous care from pregnancy through to delivery and beyond, helping them navigate the challenges of maternal health and contributing to better long-term health outcomes for both women and children in the region.

This is just the beginning. With continued support from our loyal donors, we can reach even more women and ensure the long-term sustainability of these vital health services. Donations directly contribute to the ongoing operation of the maternity ward, covering the cost of medical equipment, healthcare professionals’ salaries, and essential medicines, ensuring that these critical maternal health services are accessible to some of the most vulnerable communities. Together, we can make a lasting difference in the lives of women and children in northern Kabul.
