Hope Foundation for African Women (HFAW) conducted a life skills education and awareness session at Enchoro P.A.G Primary School to promote teenage pregnancy prevention, child protection, and the importance of remaining in school. The school had 350 pupils, comprising 200 boys and 150 girls, supported by 29 teachers and 4 subordinate staff members.
The session aimed to equip learners with practical life skills to make informed decisions, build self-confidence, resist peer pressure, and protect themselves from harmful practices. Discussions focused on the causes and consequences of teenage pregnancy, including its effects on education, wellbeing, and future opportunities. Learners were encouraged to establish personal boundaries, develop positive relationships, set educational goals, and seek guidance from trusted adults when faced with difficult situations. The session also addressed Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), early marriage, abuse, neglect, and exploitation, emphasizing children’s rights and the importance of reporting unsafe situations.
Learners actively participated in discussions and raised questions on issues affecting their safety and future. Evans asked, “Why is Female Genital Mutilation still practiced in some communities?” Brenda asked, “What should a learner do if they are threatened with early marriage?” Wairimu sought to know, “How can pupils avoid peer pressure that may lead to risky behaviour?” Kelvin asked, “What are the long-term effects of teenage pregnancy on education?” Other learners, including Leonard, David, and Daniel, raised questions about reporting abuse, legal action against perpetrators of FGM and forced child marriage, and the role of boys in ending harmful cultural practices.
The session increased awareness of teenage pregnancy prevention, child protection, and responsible decision-making. Learners were encouraged to apply life skills such as assertiveness, critical thinking, and effective communication in their daily lives. Teachers appreciated the initiative and recognized the importance of continued sensitization in promoting a safe learning environment. However, limited time restricted detailed responses to all questions, while some learners were hesitant to discuss sensitive issues openly. The availability of educational materials was also limited.
HFAW recommends regular life skills education sessions, strengthened school guidance and counselling services, and safe reporting and referral mechanisms for learners experiencing abuse or exploitation. Parents, teachers, religious leaders, and community members should work together to reinforce prevention messages and support children’s wellbeing. HFAW remains committed to empowering learners with the knowledge and skills needed to prevent teenage pregnancy, protect their rights, and remain focused on their education and future aspirations.
HFAW sincerely thanks its donors and partners for supporting life skills education and child protection. We appeal for continued support to reach more learners with teenage pregnancy prevention education and empower them to stay safe and remain in school.
