Dear Donors,
We this repot Aleimar would like to update all of you about the latest news coming from Brazil and from our project.
Firstly, unfortunately in the beginning of September southern Brazil has been hit by torrential rain and winds caused by a cyclone that has led to 27 deaths in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The Governor, Eduardo Leite, said it was the state’s worst weather disaster. Thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes because towns have been flooded. Many factors contribute o flooding, but a warming atmosphere caused by climate change makes extreme rainfall more likely.
Climate change is a real, concrete and urgent issue and Governments must take it into account. Let’s come therefore to good news: in August 2023 deforestation rate in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest has dropped by 66.1% compared to the same month last year. The reduction is particularly notable as August is historically one of the months when deforestation is at its highest. Rainforest is a crucial buffer in the fight against climate change and for the wellbeing not only of the Brazilian population. The current Brazilian Government is committed to stopping deforestation completely by 2030 and to recognizing two new areas as protected indigenous lands in the states of Acre and Amazons. However, in August eight countries that share the Amazon basin failed to create and alliance to fight deforestation because they didn’t manage to negotiate a joint goal for conservation.
Let’s focus on the project “Little Butterflies”. On August our Aleimar’s volunteers Flavio, Luciana, Stefano, Paula and Andrea went to Brazil for the periodic monitoring trip: this has been a great chance to finally visit our local representatives after a three-years stop due to Covid-19 pandemic. During the mission, our volunteers have met in person the children supported by our projects and have noted all the emerging problems that the local population has to face; prices are skyrocketing and it makes even harder for families to fulfill all their daily needs. However, all the activities of the project are going on, supporting the most fragile children in a personalized care pathway. Here you can read some letters and drawings made by our children!
Thank you for supporting our project! Your help is always more precious!
