Dear Donors,
On May 18, Brazil celebrated the National Day against Violence and Sexual Exploitation of Children and Adolescents. Breaking the silence is the first fundamental step to shine a spotlight on a reality that is as delicate as it is urgent.
In the neighborhoods of Aleixo and Alvorada, in Manaus, our local partner – the Archdiocesan Psychological Support Service for Families (SAPFAM) – reports a high exposure to violence and abuse against children. In this context, psychological support becomes essential: it offers concrete support to families, strengthens family ties and helps build a territorial network of protection for minors.
Despite the heavy rains that hit Manaus between February and April and the resulting difficulties in travel, families consistently participate in psychological support sessions at the "Little Butterflies" project center. Psychologists, pedagogists, lawyers and social workers collaborate continuously to monitor the evolution of family situations and adapt interventions based on needs.
Since February, a new space dedicated to psychological sessions has been active: a place that, in a very short time, has become a point of reference for many families, who recognize it as a safe and welcoming environment, where they feel listened to and protected.
Our psycho-pedagogical approach includes group therapy paths between parents and children, aimed at strengthening family bonds and creating a mutual aid network where it is possible to share experiences and experiences. The method is based on the idea of a community that values the individual, but finds its strength in the group. To date, four particularly delicate cases have been identified that required the activation of individual psychotherapeutic paths. Unfortunately, experience teaches us that over time, further fragilities will emerge: it often takes 5-6 months to find the courage to tell and report abuse suffered in the past, thanks to the strength of the solidarity network.
Thank you so much for continuing to support the children and adolescents of Manaus who are victims of abuse and violence. Your help is of enormous value.
Together we can make a difference.
