Field Report: October Monitoring trip to Brazil - Supporting Children Healing from Trauma

By Francesca Pellegatta | Project Manager

Dear donors,

Brazil, particularly the Amazonas region, remains a critical area for child trafficking and sexual exploitation. Persistent socio-economic vulnerability and weak protection systems continue to expose children and adolescents to significant risks.

In August 2025, our director Ilaria, accompanied by three volunteers (Stefano, Paula, and Daria), carried out a monitoring trip to Manaus, where Aleimar collaborates with Casa Esperança for “Little Butterflies” project. This initiative provides individual and group psychological support for children who are victims of violence and/or family trauma.

In the previous months, several activities were carried out, aimed at:

-          Prevention of violence; such as the “Touch Traffic Light” method, where children used the three traffic light colors to identify which parts of the body can be touched with consent, which should be treated with caution, and which must not be touched except for hygiene or medical reasons.

-          Integration; such as the “Net of Qualities” activity, that invited participants to share their names and a personal quality while passing a ball of string, creating a symbolic net that highlighted connection and the importance of each individual within the group.

-          Prevention of Teenage Pregnancy; such as the “Lifeline” activity, aimed at adults and caregivers, which involved them mapping the three key life stages—childhood, adolescence, and adulthood—on a piece of string, reflecting on significant experiences and messages they wished they had received, while fostering personal insight and group sharing.

During a full-day visit to Casa Esperança in central Manaus, the team explored a well-organized and welcoming facility offering diverse spaces for educational and psychological activities. The center includes areas for group work, private counseling, online support, and family observation sessions, along with a playroom, kitchen, and outdoor activity space. Our team was greeted by a dedicated team of 20 members (10 staff and 10 volunteers).

The day began with a participatory workshop on the responsible use of the internet and social media, attended by 23 adults and about 40 children. The session encouraged reflection on digital education and online risks. The morning concluded with a shared buffet that fostered informal dialogue with families. A final discussion with the coordinator confirmed the project’s success: families show strong participation, steady attendance, and positive engagement with the center’s ongoing initiatives.

It is crucial to keep raising awareness within the community while providing ongoing support to children and families through focused, well-structured projects. These initiatives should create safe, inclusive environments that promote personal development, strengthen resilience, and offer real opportunities for growth.

Thank you to all our donors for your generous support. Your kindness has helped Casa Esperança continue its mission of care, education, and hope, empowering families and children to build stronger futures together. Your contribution truly makes a lasting difference!
