GLOBAL GIVING NUTRITION, HEALTH & MEDICAL UPDATE

By Aileen Eunicia P. Balon-Abaca | Resource Mobilization Officer

Thirty Seven (37) children from ages three (3) months to twelve (12) years old were all provided with balanced and nutritious meals. Nine (9) babies were given lactose intolerance formulated milk. Five (5) toddlers ages eight (8) months and up are starting their weaning process from formula to solid food. Porridge and thinly sliced fruits are already being introduced to them.

Multi-vitamins including appetite enhancers have been given to a handful of children. However, Vitamin C is given to all the kids.

From February to March three (3) of the babies experienced mild colds and diarrhea. Mitigating measures were taken to prevent dehydration.

All thirty-seven (37) children have their oxygen levels and temperatures monitored twice daily.

Among the older children especially the fourteen (14) older boys ages four (4) years old to twelve (12) years old, only four (4) of them experienced viral infections with mild fever and colds symptoms. All of them were given medicine and all of them recovered quickly. Special milk is being given to two (2) of the children with heart conditions.

Four (4) kids were assessed by a developmental pediatrician. Two (2) of these kids were assessed to have mild autism and the other two (2) were diagnosed to have global development delay -the condition in which children are significantly delayed in all areas of development. These check-ups help TAHANAN to identify and apply early intervention for kids from sixteen (16) months to thirty-six (36) months. Occupational and speech therapies are urgent needs of these kids however, providers of these therapies have to be within the proximity of the shelter to aid in the ease of having to bring them to these sessions since Tahanan also has a finite number of staff in shifts that attend to all the kids.

We are very grateful for your continuous help in providing our kids with the much needed help for their therapies, medical expenses, vitamin requirements and balanced meals. Indeed it takes a village to raise a child. In this case, we are very thankful for you in these international villages in helping us raise these kids. May God reward you for all the blessings you have shared with us.
