Rashida, a 48-year-old who lives in one of Kolkata's shanties besides the sewage canal, has shown remarkable resilience and entrepreneurship throughout her life. A few years ago, she began her journey as a ragpicker, collecting discarded items and selling them at low prices. This initial work laid the foundation for her diverse business ventures.
With the income from rag picking, Rashida took a loan to start multiple small businesses, including selling fruits, garments, and imitation jewelry, particularly during festival seasons. Her dedication and hard work eventually allowed her to repay her loans. Encouraged by her progress, she took out another loan to secure a rented house in a building, which required only a small deposit. Rashida committed to repaying that amount slowly over time.
After paying half of the rental amount, she successfully booked a room and relocated her family there, while she continued to live in her old mud house. Once her family moved, she transformed the old mud house into a godown (warehouse) for rag-picking supplies. By storing a larger quantity of items in this space, she has increased her revenue, which has increased her income further.
Rashida's journey reflects her perseverance, adaptability, and ability to turn challenges into opportunities, showcasing the spirit of true entrepreneurship in the face of adversity.
