Empowering Futures: The Impact of the Lotus Pedals Project

At the heart of the Lotus Pedals Project is a vision to transform the lives of young schoolgirls through enhanced mobility and educational opportunities. This initiative provides bicycles to overcome transportation barriers, ensuring that girls like Theara can remain in school, advance their education, and move closer to a future of empowerment and independence.

Transforming Lives with Every Pedal

On July 11, 2024, the Lotus Pedals Project proudly distributed 19 bicycles to scholarship recipients as part of the GATE Phnom Penh Project. Among the recipients is Theara, an 18-year-old student in Grade 12 at Tuol Prasat Sen Sok High School. Her story is a testament to the profound impact of this program.

Theara lives with her father, who is unable to work due to chronic illness; her mother, who earns a modest $180 per month working in a factory; and her elder sister, who contributes an additional $100 by cleaning houses. Despite their hard work, the family struggles to meet basic needs and support Theara's education.

Before receiving the scholarship, Theara faced immense challenges. Financial strain, compounded by her father's illness, made it difficult to afford study materials, food, and transportation. At one point, she considered leaving school to work, but her parents were determined for her to continue her education for a better future.

In 2024, Theara was selected as a scholarship recipient. This generous support included essential study materials, a monthly allowance, school uniforms, tuition funds, and 50 kilograms of rice per month, easing the family's food expenses. Crucially, the scholarship also provided a bicycle, resolving transportation issues and enabling Theara to commute 2.5 kilometers to school more reliably.

Previously, Theara depended on a friend's ride to school. If her friend was late or absent, Theara arrived at school late and missed class, affecting her performance and drawing reprimands from teachers. Now, with her own bicycle, she proudly shares, "I love my bike so much. I am determined to pedal to school every day and get there on time! I will study hard to develop a specific skill and help lighten my family's burden."

Theara's newfound mobility has reinvigorated her commitment to her studies. She aspires to pursue design upon graduating, a field she has been passionate about since childhood. The scholarship has empowered her to chase her dreams and contribute to her personal and professional growth.

Join Us in Empowering More Girls

Your support has already made a remarkable difference in Theara's life, providing her with the tools and encouragement she needs to succeed. But there are many more girls like Theara who need our help to achieve their dreams and break free from the barriers holding them back.

We invite you to support the Lotus Pedals Project with a recurring donation. Your ongoing commitment will ensure that more girls receive the life-changing benefits of this program, empowering them to achieve their educational goals and build brighter futures.

Together, we can create a world where every girl has the opportunity to thrive, pursue her passions, and contribute to her community. Donate today to be a part of this transformative journey.
