“I want to bring this home for Ganu to eat.”
Ganu means “grandmother” in the Rukai language. When fifth-grader Xiaohui (alias) received a lunchbox from one of our Children Are Us volunteers, she couldn’t bring herself to eat it—she wanted to save it for her grandmother instead.
Xiaohui is just one of many children in indigenous villages whose lives reflect quiet resilience. They complete homework on their own, attend no tutoring or extracurricular classes, and return home after school to help their grandparents with household chores.
These children, growing up with distinct indigenous features and sun-kissed skin, may not have much in terms of material wealth—but they are rich in spirit. Their willingness to share the blessings they receive with heartfelt sincerity turns every meal into a beautiful, meaningful act of participation.
