Graduation and New Beginnings!

By Crista Trirahayu | School Principal

Dear friends and kind donors,

The last few months have been a real bustle of activity with a highlight being our third graduation as we marked the end of term and the school year while also holding two full open days in preparation for the year ahead! And of course in parallel with the usual routine of classes we’ve also been busy with our new building and getting ready for the move to it as you can see at https://www.globalgiving.org/dy/v2/pe/progress-report/edit-progress-report.html?project.projId=61651&progressReport.id=244332

We held the open days in our new building and have now just completed two sessions to welcome parents and new students joining us for the new school year that starts next week! Teachers were delighted to show both parents and children around the new classrooms and explore some special places and features within them. The sessions were deliberately extended to allow everyone the chance to ask as many questions as they liked and familiarise themselves with our brand-new rooms and apparatus. It was lovely to feel the sense of belonging develop so quickly together with a real sense of community and enthusiasm for the year ahead.

The school will open its doors for old and new Lilliputians alike on 15th July and, in anticipation of this, teachers have been hard at work preparing the classrooms, assembling furniture, checking and sorting out apparatus for each class, finalising class formations and much more to make sure everything is well prepared. We’ve also welcomed some new teachers and run several training and practice presentations sessions on topics such as how to make the best use of classroom apparatus, writing observation notes and reports, communication, record keeping and skills when interacting with special children.

Even in the midst of busy school days, it's always a pleasure to welcome visitors and during the past few months there have been several. The first were from India, Dr Neelam Malik and Deepak Verma, respectively the Director and Sports Director of Arya Global Group of Schools, and they were followed by a return visit and lecture by Professor Wang Jui-ching of Northern Illinois University in the USA. She gave a fascinating talk on music in education and how to introduce music to early-age children in fun and simple ways. Another returning visitor was Sean, a psychology student from Fordham University in New York, who ran workshops on Building Relationships and Boosting Children’s Self-Esteem, with separate sessions for teachers and parents. Watch this space for news of more visitors later this year!

With only a few days to go now, everyone is super excited about the first day of school and settling into the new classrooms in our new building! New ambience, new friends, new materials and a new playground; it’s going to be a great year! And of course it is your support that helps make all this possible, for which we are greatly appreciative. Just as we are opening the doors to new students, we extend a warm welcome to our friends and supporters to come and visit us and see our work in person and hope to see you here before long.

With huge thanks and best wishes from all of us at TCKN Foundation and our school in Yogyakarta. Until soon!
