Dear Friends,
Greetings from Western Samar. We are now expanding our work from Leyte province to Western Samar and starting with Gandara where the local government voiced the need to start safe sanitation initiative via hygienic and affordable latrines. Both the provinces of Leyte and Samar were affected by Typhoon Haiyan but it is Leyte that received most publicity and attention starting in Tacloban and thus support for Samar is very much lacking. We are teaming-up with the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the local government in order to implement this project. We found out that of the 69 barrios in Gandara, 30% lacked access to latrines and many people are defecating in the open. With huge river systems, residents especially children suffer from schistosomiasis mainly with river snails as the carrier. We are aiming to build 300 pilot latrines in the few months to come.
I will provide you with more update as this project progresses.
Hoping for your continuing support to our project.
Very sincerely yours,
Cora
