A Tapestry of Generosity - Meet six of the remarkable people helping transform lives at Maison de la Gare in 2025

The year 2025 began with a vibrant wave of commitment and compassion at Maison de la Gare. So far this year, we have welcomed eighteen individual volunteers from around the world, each bringing their unique talents, energy, and heart to our mission of supporting talibé children. In addition, two groups — each with around twenty participants — joined us for intensive stays, contributing to educational, medical, and community projects with remarkable generosity and spirit.

This article highlights six of the individual volunteers, whose stories reflect the diversity and richness of the contributions we receive. Their dedication is a living testament to what it means to be of service, and we are proud to share their journeys.

Ava Mendler: Literacy and compassion in action

Ava Mendler spent two months immersed in our literacy program, helping children unlock the power of reading and writing. Her joyful spirit infused recreational activities with laughter and connection, while her personal involvement in hygiene care and daara visits brought comfort and dignity to the children’s daily lives.

Charlotte Taveau: Healing with heart

Charlotte Taveau’s month-long stay was defined by her deep engagement in our infirmary. With professionalism and empathy, she provided medical care to vulnerable children and joined outreach rounds in the daaras. Her generous donation of medications significantly strengthened our ability to respond to health needs.

Joshua Efford: Teaching with purpose

For six weeks, Joshua Efford led literacy workshops and taught English to older talibé children. His patient, encouraging approach fostered confidence and curiosity. Joshua’s immersion in Senegalese culture—through language, cuisine, and family life—reflected the spirit of mutual exchange that defines our volunteer program.

Quentin Joly: A multitalented force

Quentin Joly brought energy and versatility to every corner of Maison de la Gare. From teaching math and English to organizing sports and helping with medical care, Quentin’s presence was a beacon of solidarity. He even contributed to the construction of our new administrative building, embodying the spirit of hands-on service.

Maÿliss Odadan: Gentle strength and dedication

In just three weeks, Maÿliss Odadan made a lasting impact through her work in the infirmary and in the literacy programs. Her calm, attentive presence created a safe space for healing and learning. Through play and shared moments, she built meaningful connections that enriched the lives of the children and staff.

Charlie Quesnel: A short stay, a lasting impact

Charlie Quesnel’s two-week stay with us was filled with purpose. He supported literacy efforts, led recreational activities, and helped with daily operations — all with patience, good humor, and a collaborative spirit. His adaptability and warmth made a deep impression on everyone he met.
