According to the Centre of Disease Control 'Malaria continues to be a leading cause of preventable illness and death in the world.' The World Health Organisation estimated 263 million malaria cases and 597,000 malaria deaths in 83 countries, in 2023. The Butterfly Tree's 'Mosquito Nets for Schools' programme is helping to reduce malaria cases in Zambia. Thanks to a generous grant, in June The Butterfly Tree distributed 3,600 mosquito nets to several school in Mulobezi District, in Western Province of Zambia. These have been given to pupils and teachers. Last year there were 820 malaria cases per 1,000 population recorded in Mulobezi.

Two more schools that have benefitted this month are Katanda and Chipondo in Kalomo District. Sadly, last month four children from Katanda village died after contracting malaria. 1,800 mosquito nets were given to pupils at Katanda and Chipondo schools. Pupils were given advice by a nurse who accompanied our volunteer on how to use the mosquito nets to provide the best protection from malaria.

In addition to these mosquito nets what will also help in the detection and treating of malaria is the new health post we are currently developing in Katanda. The project includes the construction of a clinic, two staff houses, a mother’s shelter, a borehole and solar-powered water reticulation system, toilets, and a biodigester for waste. We will also provide equipment for the facility.

A mosquito nets cost just £5 or $7 and could save a child’s life.
