Zambia is now experiencing the winter season when the temperatures and lower and the weather is warm and dry. This is the period when malaria cases start to reduce, and communities can relax a little. During this time, we do evaluations on the malaria prevention work we have done in the past twelve months.
We have put in considerable amount of funding in Moomba, Mukuni and Nyawa Chiefdom to provide protection where there is a high prevalence of malaria and where little or no other support is available.
We painted over 1,000 homes with a safe insecticidal coating, and placed larvicide granules in stagnant pools and streams targeting breeding sites for mosquitos. These products are harmless to humans, animals and fish.
In addition, we have donated 2,300 mosquito nets in the last year. This included a project, which we pioneered at River View School, and has proved to be highly successful. In October 2017, using grant aid the charity donated 1,400 mosquito nets to the school. Every pupil and teacher received a mosquito net, with some being held for the start of the new school year in January. I am delighted to report that to date ZERO cases of absenteeism from malaria have been recorded.
So often school children get left out when the government health officers are distributing mosquito nets. There is always a shortfall and priority is given to infants and pregnant women.
This is also the period where raise funds to purchase mosquito nets, safe insecticidal coating and larvicide granules to be distributed in September prior to the onset of the rainy season. Reports will shortly be sent to us from the Ministry of Health with updated data on how well our interventions are helping to reduce the number of malaria cases.
