AREAS TARGETED FOR MALARIA PREVENTION
This year we have been able to increase our support to help the fight against malaria. In November we started distributing the first of the new Vectorcide products in the Mukuni and Sekute Chiefdoms, providing improved protection against malaria. There had been a reduction in new cases of malaria in the Mukuni Chiefdom up until the end of 2014. This was mainly due to the widespread coverage of mosquito nets, which we had donated.
However in 2015, not only Mukuni, but most areas in the Southern Province of Zambia and Zimbabwe, recorded an alarming increase in cases of malaria. This was due to a number of reasons:
The Butterfly Tree carried out the process of applying the coating inside dwellings in targeted areas of the Mukuni Chiefdom. Chuunga, which records the highest number of cases of malaria, does not get any support from the Ministry of Health. They have never conducted Indoor Residual Spraying in this area, which is an hour and forty minute drive through rocky and hilly terrain, from Mukuni Village. It becomes inaccessible during the rainy season.
Siafwebafweba and Kamwi areas were also covered. The surrounding villages are close to a stream and consequently there is a high record of malaria cases.
A total of 740 structures were coated with the addition of the health facilities. A further 289 dwellings were coated in Simoonga area in the Sekute Chiefdom.
The programme was readily accepted by the communities as it will last for two years, and is not harmful to humans and animals as is the case with Indoor Residual Spraying.
To date over 1,000 households have been coated with Mozzimort, a safe insecticidal paint.
In addition we are using Larvicide granules, in known breeding areas, to prevent larva developing into mosquito. Our aim is to raise funds and awareness in order to distribute these products throughout Zambia.
To assist us with this program we invited local volunteers to be trained in the use of the products.
It is hoped that the charity can obtain further funding for more areas that have high prevalence of malaria in order to protect children from contracting malaria.
