Summary

Malaria is the biggest killer of man. Every 2 minutes a child dies from malaria. Until there is a cure prevention is the only way to save lives. The Butterfly Tree runs a successful malaria prevention program entitled 'Mosquito Nets for Schools' in remote communities in Zambia. School age children have no protection as priority is given to under-fives and pregnant women. We donate mosquito nets directly to school children. This intervention can help to save the lives of vulnerable children.

Challenge

Globally in 2024, there were an estimated 282 million malaria cases and 610 000 malaria deaths in 80 countries. The WHO African Region carries a disproportionately high share of the global malaria burden. In 2024, the WHO African Region was home to 95% of malaria cases (265 million) and 95% (579 000) of malaria deaths. Children under 5 accounted for about 75% of all malaria deaths in the Region. Malaria is prevalent all year round in Zambia.

Solution

Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease caused by protozoan parasites belonging to the genus Plasmodium. Five species account for almost all human infections, with P falciparum being the most severe. When an infected mosquito bites a human, it can introduce the parasite from its saliva into the person's blood. The long lifespan and strong human-biting habit of the Anopheles species that carry malaria are the main reasons for the high incidence of malaria in Africa.

Long-Term Impact

According to the World Health Organisation: 'The biggest challenge faced by malaria endemic countries in Africa is inadequate financing for malaria prevention and treatment services for people at risk of malaria. As a result, there are communities or populations that cannot access prevention measures or treatment when needed.' The long-term impact of our intervention will help to reduce the burden of malaria and prevent loss of life.
