Hi [donor name],
In my last field visit, I met María, a 23-year-old woman who got married with the dream of becoming a mother, but she tragically lost two babies at four and six months of pregnancy. After these painful experiences, doctors discovered a bacterial infection in her uterus. Following treatment, she was finally able to conceive.
The pregnancy, however, was far from easy. At eight months, María was rushed to the hospital for an emergency cesarean section. She developed preeclampsia and went into cardiac arrest during delivery, only to be revived after a medication was injected directly into her chest. During the surgery, doctors also discovered a mass in her uterus, which was later found to be benign. Her baby Zoe was born purple due to a lack of amniotic fluid, and her lungs had to be developed with medical assistance. The cost of the delivery and María’s medical care in a private hospital exceeded 100,000 quetzales—a debt that forced her husband to migrate to the United States in search of income to cover the expenses.
Zoe faced severe health challenges from the start, which later led to a diagnosis of growth delay. But today, Zoe, now 14 months old, is a healthy child. The moment you step into her home, the family’s effort to her well-being are undeniable.
Her favorite food is strawberries, and her mother and paternal grandmother ensure she receives a complete and balanced diet that includes all food groups every day. This month’s goal is for Zoe to begin walking on her own and continue gaining weight appropriate for her age and developmental stage.
Wuqu’ Kawoq treatment includes personalized care, regular evaluations, nutritional education, basic food staples like eggs and beans, and supplements. These resources, combined with her family’s ongoing dedication, continue to support her growth and well-being. Thank you for your support — together, we are making a lasting difference in the fight against malnutrition.
With gratitude,
Andrea Enriquez
