Empowering Mothers through Nutrition and Education

Dear Friends,

Nothing changes a life quite as much, or quite as quickly, as motherhood.  For Annette Cycon, a clinical social worker and founder of MotherWoman, it was clear that nothing helps moms get through the process of becoming a mom quite as much as talking to other moms.

MotherWoman is a nonprofit Annette started when her daughters were babies.  She hoped to give moms both advice and practical tools for motherhood.  She created MotherWoman's workshops as a place for women to be together, to share real-life stories about being a parent, and to address important issues that affect women today.  Her motto is “Empowering mothers, creating community, changing the world”.

Annette has led these workshops throughout the U.S. and is now leading them in rural Guatemala.  Thanks to her support groups, we have been able to give mothers a space for healing and for transformation.  By talking about key issues like postpartum depression and food choices during pregnancy and infancy.  Postpartum depression can often carry a stigma, but women who have participated in our workshops are now knowledgeable of the signs of depression, and how postpartum depression should be addressed.

We at Maya Health Alliance have created a symbiotic relationship between Annette’s work and our nutrition program. In conjunction, the two programs have given many women in rural Guatemala the opportunity and the knowledge necessary to take better care of themselves and of their children.  In empowering mothers, we give strength to our future.  Through our programming, we continue our efforts to break the cycle of poverty in rural Guatemala.

With your support, we will continue to empower mothers and give them the skills and knowledge necessary to feed both themselves and their families not only through healthy nutritional choices, but through community.

With gratitude,

The team at Maya Health Alliance | Wuqu' Kawoq
