Nancy, a shy girl just over a year old, lives with her parents and two older brothers in the community of Paraxquin. The family operates a store where they sell vegetables, fruits and candy, and Nancy’s mother Safira also weaves huipiles when she has time to help support the family.
In October 2024, Nancy joined our Family-Centered Nutrition Program with moderate growth delays, including stunting, or short height for her age. During home visits, the nutrition team observed that Safira had difficulty keeping her children from eating the sweets they stocked in the family store. Wuqu' Kawoq Nutritionist Johana took the opportunity during her monthly visits to talk with the family about the importance of providing foods rich in vitamins, such as fruits and vegetables.
After learning more about what foods are most beneficial for her children, Safira now takes care to offer healthy treats like a banana instead of cookies. And her efforts are paying off: Nancy’s indicators have improved and she is reaching healthy targets for growth. She has gained more than two kilograms and grown nearly 10 centimeters since entering the program.
Guatemala has the highest rate of childhood stunting in Latin America. To build healthier futures for children, we partner with families over eight months. In addition to providing education, we also deliver food supplements and ongoing support. Thank you for being part of this change!
