Integrated Mangrove Aquaculture a new approach
By M. Sabrin Ahmed Roty | Project Leader
Integrated mangrove aquaculture farm
Mangroves are important for live and livelihood of the coastal people. BEDS (Bangladesh Environment and Development Society) has been working for restoring mangroves since 2013. Till now BEDS has planted 2,70,000 mangroves in the Sundarbans coastal region.
BEDS has taken an initiative to Integrated Mangrove Aquaculture at Paschim Dhangmari village under Dacope sub district of Khulna district. 20 shrimp farmers are engaged in Integrated Mangrove Aquaculture. In their planting mangroves in their farms and helping to create mangrove ecosystem for the shrimps and other fish species. So that the fishes can get their feed from mangrove ecosystem. The farmers are practicing organic farming.
One of our beneficiaries expressed his feeling, “I live very close to Sundarbans. We are shrimp farmers. We earn money by selling the fishes. We produce shrimps and other fishes but do not get much profit. BEDS has motivated us to perform Integrated Mangrove Aquaculture in our farms. For this reason, a wider dyke has been made for mangrove plantation. We plant the mangroves in the dykes and other higher land inside the farm. We take care of the mangroves. In heavy rain and floods our fishes did not wash away due to strong dyke and also for the mangroves in the dyke. In Integrated Mangrove Aquaculture production cost has been reduced. We are also getting profit from the planted mangroves. I collect Nipa Palm and sell them and earn money. We are getting much profit of the mangrove based organic shrimps.”
We would like to thank all our donors for their contribution and faith for us. We are also requesting our donors to start monthly recurring donations. For recurring donation please find the link below;

Mangrove sapling production becomes profitable
By M. Sabrin Ahmed Roty | Project Leader
Working in mangrove nurseries
Mangroves play an important role in the environment. BEDS (Bangladesh Environment and Development Society) has been working for restoring mangroves since 2013. Till now BEDS has planted 2,70,000 mangroves and established 6 mangrove nurseries in the Sundarbans coastal region.
Coastal people are getting much profit from the mangrove nurseries and others are motivated by their achievement. Thus, mangrove coverage has been increasing with the hard work of coastal people.
Some of our beneficiaries said, “I live at Mathurapur village under Shyamnagar sub district of Satkhira district which is adjacent to Sundarbans. I work in the mangrove nursery. Mangrove plantation season is going on. Nursery saplings are in high demand for the survivability of the saplings. Many people are coming to our nursery and buying mangrove saplings. We are getting much profit from the mangrove saplings and contributing to our family. The area of the mangrove nursery is small. It’s our dream to increase our nursery area. So, we are working hard to fulfill our dream.”
We would like to thank all our donors for their contribution and faith for us. We are also requesting our donors to start monthly recurring donations. For recurring donation please find the link below;

One of the women has expressed her feeling, “The mangrove seeds floats with the tidal water and come to the river bank. Before we collected the mangrove seeds and used as fuel. But with the contribution of BEDS, we stated producing saplings will the mangrove seeds. Before I worked in the mangrove nursery, after finishing my household work. People used to laugh at me when I worked in the mangrove nursery. I produced thousands of mangrove saplings and earned money from the mangrove saplings. I am contributing to my family expenses and I gain a respectful position not only in my family but also among the villagers. They are also inspired by the success of mangrove nurseries. I thank the donors who give us the support to live a better live.”
