Mangroves of the tropical coasts are one of the most productive ecosystems on earth. It helps to stabilize environment and sinks a large volume of carbon. But unfortunately, 35% of mangrove forests have been reduced since 1980s from the world because of excessive human interference and every year 2.1% mangroves are decreasing (Ref: FAO 2003).
People of the Sundarbans region have destroyed a natural mangrove buffer zone from the coastal periphery due to agricultural land extension, shrimp cultivation, household making, collecting fuel wood and furniture making. So, during natural disaster, people have to face more damage what the buffer zone used to protect in the past. As a result of the destruction of that buffer zone, intensity of river bank has been increased.
BEDS with its special concern for mangrove restoration and protection for stabilizing the environment, has been trying to restore and protect mangroves in the Sundarbans coastal region since 2013. BEDS has been restoring mangroves in the Sundarbans coastal region since 2013 together with local community. Now BEDS is trying to raise fund from GlobalGiving in order to restore and protect 0.1 million mangroves in the Sundarbans periphery. Target grant for the project is 100,000 $ and so far, 1,381 $ is raised from 98 donations.
We have been motivating our villagers for mangrove plantation and protection for a long time. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, we cannot move to the field quite often; so, we are communicating with them over phone and social media. Now our community is collecting mangrove seeds to establish a mangrove nursery beside the plantation site. Once they establish the nursery, it will be easier for them to restore mangroves in the selected sites.
We want to thank all our donors for your kind support. We believe that you will be with us with your donation to protect the Sundarbans coastal area through mangrove restoration and protection 100,000 mangrove saplings in the Sundarbans coastal region.
