Happy villagers after mangrove plantation
Happy villagers after mangrove plantation

Mangroves of the tropical coasts are one of the most productive ecosystems on earth. It helps to stabilize environment and sinks a large volume of carbon. But unfortunately, 35% of mangrove forests have been reduced since 1980s from the world because of excessive human interference and every year 2.1% mangroves are decreasing (Ref: FAO 2003). Sundarbans is the single largest mangrove forest of the world. It is a UNESCO declared the Natural World Heritage and RAMSAR wetland site. Sundarbans mangrove forest of Bangladesh is the lifeline and safe guard of almost 3.5 millions of vulnerable coastal people.

Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) is a community based nonprofit non government and development organization. BEDS has is raising fund from GlobalGiving platform to restore 0.1 million mangroves in the Sundarbans periphery. Aim of the project is to stabilize the environment and reduce riverbank erosion. Target grant of the proposed project is 100,000 $ and so far, 1,552 $ is raised from 106 donations.

We have already planted 2000 mangrove on the bank of Dhangmari river under Banishanta union of Dacope sub district of Khulna district in Bangladesh engaging the local villagers. A total of 50 villagers participated in that event. The mangrove plantation activity was started on 20th June 2020 and ended at 22nd June 2020. Before starting the plantation, we distributed masks among the participants (male, female and children). We instructed them on how to plant the mangroves. After that, the motivated villagers conducted the mangrove plantation activity and expressed their happy feelings and gratitude to the donors. After the plantation activity, we instructed and requested them to protect their planted mangrove saplings.

We are highly grateful to the donor for being so kind to us. We would like to thank all our donors for their continuous support. We believe that you will be with us with continuously for stabilizing the ever degrading nature and reducing coastal peoples’ erosion vulnerability.
