Necessity of mangroves goes beyond saying. It is priceless assets for the environment. It has huge contribution to ecosystem stabilization by storing carbon at a large extent. Besides this it helps to protect the disaster vulnerable coastal households from natural disasters like cyclone, flood etc. It creates livelihood options for a lot of people. Moreover, it prevents riverbank erosion and protects the embankment. Sundarbans is the single largest mangrove forest of the world and it is a UNESCO declared the Natural World Heritage. Beside this it is a RAMSAR Wetland Site. This unique ecosystem has not only national but also international significance. It is the lifeline and safe guard of almost 3.5 millions of vulnerable coastal people. Unfortunately, due to diverse human activities and climate change this mangrove ecosystem is under epic jeopardy.
Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) is extremely concerned with mangrove restoration and protection. BEDS has been conducting community based mangrove plantation and restoration since 2013. Now BEDS is raising fund from GlobalGiving platform to restore 0.1 million mangroves in the Sundarbans periphery. Aim of the project is to stabilize the environment and reduce riverbank erosion. Target grant of the proposed project is 100,000 $ and so far, 1,592 $ is raised from 110 donations.
Under this project, a total of 2000 mangroves have been planted. The planted mangroves are growing well. The villagers are also establishing a mangrove nursery for further plantation activity. We have been motivating the community to take care of the planted mangroves and establish the nursery. We are also providing technical assistance to them on how to develop a mangrove nursery.
We expect that with the kindness of the respected donors; we would be able to raise our target fund for the project soon.
We are extremely thankful to the donors for being so kind to us and we hope that all our donors will be continuously standing beside us to protect the nature and save the coastal lives of Bangladesh.
