Mangroves are priceless assets for the environment. It has massive contribution to ecosystem stabilization and livelihood generation. It is of tremendous value in protecting the disaster vulnerable coastal households from natural disasters. Moreover, it prevents riverbank erosion and keep the embankment safe. Sundarbans is the single largest mangrove forest of the world and it is a UNESCO declared the Natural World Heritage. Beside this it is a RAMSAR Wetland Site. This unique ecosystem has not only national but also international significance. Unfortunately, this unique ecosystem is under serious jeopardy due to diverse human activities and climate change.
Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) is extremely concerned with mangrove restoration and protection and has been conducting community based mangrove plantation and restoration since 2013. Currently, the organization is raising fund from GlobalGiving platform to restore mangroves in the Sundarbans periphery.Target grant of the proposed project is 100,000 $ and so far, 1,652 $ is raised from 112 donations.
We have already planted 2000 mangroves from this project with the active participation of local community. The planted mangroves are growing well day by day. A mangrove nursery has been established for further plantation activity. We have been motivating the community to take care of the planted mangroves. Due to COVID-19 situation, we are communicating with the villagers over phone and sometimes visiting the field directly.
We are absolutely thankful to all the donors for being so kind to us and we hope that you all will be continuously standing beside us to protect the nature and save the coastal lives.
