Mangroves play a significant role regarding environmental protection and livelihood improvement. Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) has been conducting community based mangrove plantation and restoration activities in the Sundarbans coastal region of Bangladesh since 2013.

BEDS is now in preparatory stage of planting 20,000 mangroves in Banishanta union. We have already negotiated with the local government about it. We have confirmed the mangrove saplings by discussing with the nursery owners. We have a plan to plant that mangrove inside 20 shrimp farms and one single plot. We got the concern from 15 pond owners so far. We hope that we would be able to get permission from rest of the 5 pond owners soon. Last week, two representatives from Social Forest Department visited our proposed area and provided their valuable feedbacks. They were extremely happy to see the proposed site and nurseries. They suggested us to select the perfect species for the proposed area’s soil. They also requested us to give much attention for the protection as cattle are often seen here and there. They govt. representatives also praised the community based initiatives of BEDS. So, now we are planning to fence the site. We are always discussing with the local villagers before taking any decisions. We hope that we will be able to create a mangrove buffer zone in the Sundarbans coastal area of Bangladesh.

We are extremely grateful to our donors for their contribution and faith for us. We are thereby requesting all our donors to start monthly recurring donations, if you want to help us continuously. It will be of immense help for us.
