Mangrove Restoration for Coastal Protection

Undoubtedly mangroves are of significant value regarding environmental protection. But most of the coastal people are not aware of conserving the Sundarbans mangrove forest. Coastal women usually collect mangrove seeds those are found in the bank of the coastal rivers. They collect the seeds to dry it to become useable for cooking fuel. But they don’t have any idea about how dangerous it is for the mangrove ecosystem. Regeneration process gets jerked by this kind of immature and destructive activities. But BEDS (Bangladesh Environment and Development Society) has identified a solution of it. The organization trained the coastal women on how to establish mangrove nurseries from the collected mangrove seeds. As a result, 5 coastal women established 5 mangrove nurseries. Currently, BEDS is conducting mangrove plantation activities with the saplings of those nurseries. And we expect a mangrove buffer zone through our initiatives.

So far BEDS has planted 11,940 mangroves this month together with local people. Among those planted mangroves, there was a single plot and two ponds. We will plant 9000 more mangroves in more 18 plots at the soonest time possible. Today 2000 saplings from the nurseries have been carried to 4 other selected ponds. Those saplings will be planted tomorrow. As the temperature is getting higher, it becomes a little difficult for the villagers to plant the mangroves at noon; so, we are inspiring local villagers to plant the mangroves in the morning. Things are going quite smoothly according to our plan.
