Mangroves have significant value for environmental protection. BEDS (Bangladesh Environment and Development Society) has been working for restoring mangroves since 2013. 21th March was International Day of Forests. This day was celebrated to raise awareness on the importance of forests all over the world. The theme of this day is “Forest restoration: a path to recovery and well-being.”
BEDS has celebrated this day with the local community at Paschim Dhangmari village under Dacope sub district of Khulna District to increase awareness of the local people for mangrove conservation. Most of them are forest dwellers. So, we arranged an experience sharing program. In the program, they shared their experiences regarding forests, how the forest provides their livelihood support, biodiversity of the forest, the attack of Royal Bengal Tiger and so on. After that they write down the initiatives should be taken to increase mangrove coverage and conserve Sundarbans. They said that they are really grateful to the forest and they consider Sundarbans as their mother.
Recently we have planted 20,000 mangrove saplings by the involvement of local community. BEDS staffs are monitoring the planted mangroves and also the activity of the guard. We will arrange a mangrove restoration challenge assessment program with the local people. In the program, we will find out the challenges of mangrove restoration. We are working hard and soul to create buffer zone and request for your support.
