Mangroves have great importance regarding environmental protection. It is the most important and productive ecosystem among the tropical forest on earth. BEDS (Bangladesh Environment and Development Society) has been conducting community based mangrove plantation and restoration activities since 2013. Till now BEDS has been planted 2,50,000 mangroves at the Sundarbans coastal region of Bangladesh.
BEDS has been planting mangroves for a long time and BEDS is successful to restore the mangroves. BEDS adopted some techniques to reduce the mangrove mortality rate. A small mangrove forest has been developed in the plantation site. The site has become the habitat of lots of biodiversity. Local people are also getting benefit from the mangrove forests. They are collecting honey, using fruits of mangroves to make pickles. Mangroves not only act as a shelterbelt for the coastal people but also they are getting economic benefit from the planted mangroves. Local people are getting benefit from the planted mangroves and now they are planting mangroves by their own initiative. Now they are taking care of the planted mangroves by themselves.
One of our beneficiary said, “Before we used to destroy the seeds, cut the mangroves. But BEDS has made us realized that we can get benefit from mangroves without destroying them. We are planting more and more mangroves and taking care of the mangroves by ourselves.”
We would like to thank all our donors for their support for us. We are also requesting our donors to start monthly recurring donations. For recurring donation please find the link below;
