Mangroves are provides both environmental and economical support to the people. BEDS (Bangladesh Environment and Development Society) has been working for restoring mangroves since 2013. Till now BEDS has planted 2,70,000 mangroves in the Sundarbans coastal region.
BEDS has been motivating the coastal community for mangrove conservation. Children are the future leader and BEDS conduct several environmental education programs with the children to conserve mangrove forest. The people of Mathurapur village under Shyamnagar sub district of Satkhira district (adjacent to Sundarbans) lives below the poverty line. They are forest resource harvesters. In this Covid pandemic, their income has been reduced a lot as they do not go different places for work. Most of the children of this area suffer from malnutrition.
At present BEDS has taken an innovative step to encourage the children for mangrove conservation as well as reducing malnutrition. BEDS has been providing nutritious food to the 170 children of poor fishermen and ethnic community (munda) at Mathurapur village. Mangrove saplings are planted involving 170 students and after that they feed healthy food like rice, vegetable, fish, meat, fruit and sweet. BEDS will perform this program 15 times with the same 170 children. Thus children will plant more plants and get healthy food. The children will be able to understand the role of mangroves in their life.
