Mangrove Conservation & Restoration in Bangladesh

Mangroves are important for life and livelihood of the coastal community. BEDS (Bangladesh Environment and Development Society) has been working for restoring mangroves since 2013. Till now BEDS has planted 2,70,000 mangroves in the Sundarbans coastal region.

BEDS has established 5 nurseries at Pashcim Dhangmari village (under Dacope sub district of Khulna district) and one nursery at Mathurapur village (under Shyamnagar sub district of Satkhira district) with the help of coastal community to improve their socio-economic condition.

One of the owner of the mangrove nursery said, “Mangrove nursery is new in this region. BEDS motivated us to establish mangrove nurseries. Before a little number of people were interested in the mangrove nurseries. People use to taunt us for working in the mangrove nursery. But we keep working in the mangrove nursery. We started selling mangrove saplings from last year. We sold the sapling in smaller amount. A few days ago, we have sold 10,000 mangrove saplings to a local organization. They visited our nursery and bought the saplings and also bear the transport cost. We have earned 2,000 euro by selling the mangrove saplings. It was dream to earn this amount of money to the poor women like us. We are very happy. We will produce more and more mangrove saplings in future. Mangroves not only save us from cyclones but also provide us economic benefit to lead a better life.”
