Mangrove Conservation & Restoration in Bangladesh

Mangroves save the coastal life from several disaster and provide livelihood support to the coastal community. BEDS (Bangladesh Environment and Development Society) has been working for restoring mangroves since 2013. Till now BEDS has planted 2,70,000 mangroves in the Sundarbans coastal region.

BEDS has been motivating the local community adjacent to Sundarbans for a long time. BEDS has been trying to create another livelihood scope for the coastal people. BEDS has already established 5 nurseries at Paschim Dhangari village (under Dacope sub district of Khulna district) and 6^th nursery at Mathurapur village (under Shyamnagar sub district of Satkhira district).  In the previous year, BEDS provided infrastructural support like fencing of the nursery, shading facilities, installing water system, poly bag and cowdung. In this year, they have bought the poly bag and arranged polybag by themselves with the profit of the mangrove nurseries.

One of the beneficiaries expressed her feelings, “Before I used to engage in household works or vegetable cultivation. I could not support my family in our insolvency. But now I engage in mangrove nursery. I am earning money from the mangrove nursery and contributing in family expenses. Now I have bought polybag and producing more and more saplings. We are continuing the activities of nursery by the profit of the mangrove nursery that we have got by selling mangrove saplings. I will produce more and more mangrove saplings.”
