Community Based Ecological Mangrove Restoration

By Md. Maksudur Rahman | Project Leader

We believe that any kind of conservation initiatives becomes successful and sustainable when local communities are on board; fully understand the value of their participation and long term benefits. So, together with coastal communities we have been planting, regenerating, conserving Sundarbans mangroves ecosystem to maintain the ecological balance and to create harmony between humans and nature.

The Sundarbans is the single largest mangrove forest in the world, located in the south-western part of Bangladesh. With its array of trees and wildlife the forest is a showpiece of natural history. It is also a center of economic activities for the coastal community. Honey, fish, nipa palm are the main resources of the Sundarbans that people collect for their livelihoods.

But in recent times, the Sundarbans ecosystems have come under severe pressure due to climatic and anthropogenic reasons. Due to the lack of conservation initiatives on this flagship ecosystem by the local people, tropical cyclones sweep across the Sundarbans, which are claiming many lives, destroying houses, damages agricultural crops and lands. In that regards BEDS has been trying to restore the mangrove together with the coastal community and regularly conducting the mangrove ecosystem conservation education among the teachers, students, and forest dwellers through informal and onsite training program.

Under the "Community Based Ecological Mangrove Restoration Project in Bangladesh from 01 April to 31 August 2021 we have planted 15000 of mangrove saplings at the Munshiganj union of Shyamnagar sub-district under Satkhira district of Bangladesh by engaging the local community in terms of biodiversity, coastal protection, mangrove-based livelihoods promotion as well as climate change adaptation and mitigation.
