The Sundarbans is a cluster of low-lying islands in the Bay of Bengal, famous for its unique mangrove forests. This active delta region is among the largest in the world. But the ecologically fragile Sundarbans region has lost about 24.55 percent of mangroves due to erosion over the past three decades. Mangroves are resilient to the damage caused by extreme weather events such as cyclones but physical damage caused by the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme events, such as cyclone Amphan, impairs their potential spring back. The degrading health of mangroves affects their resilience and recovery potential against climate change consequences like erosion. BEDS has been planting mangroves since 2013 for reducing the impact of the climate change and for increasing the resilience of the unique forest and to protect river bank.
This plantation will help the forest and the local people with a long-term benefit. It will enrich the forest and will help the local people to survive from the erosion and climate change. A millions of people living throughout this complex ecosystem are currently benefiting from the coastal protection provided by these mangrove plantations. They are getting benefit from the ecosystem services the coastal plantations proved, such as wind and storm mitigation and river bank erosion.
So, it’s our urge to our donor to help them to make the local people survive from natural calamities by planting more and more trees in the coastal area.
We would like to thank all our donors for their contribution and faith for us. We are also requesting our donors to start monthly recurring donations. For recurring donation please find the link below:
