Mangroves have significant value for environmental protection. BEDS (Bangladesh Environment and Development Society) has been working for Mangroves restoration since 2013.
BEDS always were in the role for observing special day considering mangrove protection. Recently BEDS observed World Wildlife Day 2022 on 3rd March where the theme was “Recovering key species for ecosystem restoration". As per the theme, BEDS put emphasis on mangrove restoration through plantation activity.
BEDS celebrated the day with local people and children adjacent to Sundarbans. BEDS tried to explain the local people about the importance of wildlife as well as the importance of mangrove plantation in our ecosystem. After the discussion local people went for mangrove sapling plantation activity in shrimp farm dyke just beside the Sundarbans mangrove forest. On the other hand, 20 coastal children participated art competition activity for observing that day. Theme of their competition was to draw wildlife of mangrove forest, conservation of Sundarbans mangrove forest.
Impact: Almost 200 mangrove saplings were planted with the help of 40 local people. Coastal local people got the knowledge on why they need to restore mangrove. And through art competition, children came to know about the biodiversity of Sundarbans mangroves which are decreasing day by day due to deforestation. And they also learned how they can conserve the Sundarbans wildlife ecosystem through mangrove plantation.
