Mangroves play an important role for the protection of coastal river bank. Its unique root system serves as the barrier for coastal embankment erosion. BEDS (Bangladesh Environment and Development Society) has been working for restoring mangroves since 2013. Till now BEDS has planted 3,15,770 mangrove saplings which restore almost 30 hectors area in the Sundarbans coastal region of Bangladesh.
As a part of coastal embankment protection, BEDS started to plant mangrove at the river bank of Poshur River together with local people. With the target to of covering almost 500 ha area within next five years, BEDS has already restored 16 ha of area of the river bank.
In every plantation inauguration ceremony BEDS convey the importance of mangrove restoration towards the local people. BEDS also discussed about the procedure involve in successful plantation. Local people get to know about the ecological as well as economic benefits of mangrove restoration through team BEDS. After the discussion all the local people get involved in mangrove plantation.
Active participation of local people in mangrove restoration made a feeling in their mind to keep the mangrove alive for the sake of their future life and livelihoods. The restoration activity makes a sense in their life that they are also the part of mangrove ecosystem and they have some duty to fulfill.
