Practice that reduce mangrove saplings mortality

Mangroves act as a protector for the coastal people but also serve the people of all over the world. BEDS (Bangladesh Environment and Development Society) has been working for restoring mangroves since 2013. Till now BEDS has planted 3,15,770 mangroves in the coastal region of Bangladesh.

BEDS has been planted mangroves for long time. When BEDS started planting mangroves, BEDS faced lots of challenges, saplings mortality rate which was collected from natural sources were almost 80%. Also it affected the natural regeneration process. After that BEDS has started planting mangrove saplings which are raised in mangrove nurseries in poly bag. Root system of the nursery raised mangrove saplings is best and their survivability rate is much higher.

BEDS also use stalking for the planted mangroves to protect the mangroves from displacement due to wind and tidal water. BEDS also fence the mangrove plantation area to protect it from the grazing of cattle’s. BEDS engaged local community in each steps of mangrove plantation and protection and now they are getting benefit from the mangroves. Now the mortality rate is 10%. Local community is taking care of the mangroves by themselves for their benefit.
