Mangrove Conservation & Restoration in Bangladesh

Sundarbans such and unique mangrove forest in the world, holding up diverse biodiversity and large storage of carbon sink. It’s also act as barrier for coastal erosion and save the coastal resources from severe natural disaster. So, increasing the mangrove coverage in the coastal are is one of the prime work BEDS has been conducting since 2013.

June to September is the planation season for Bangladesh. So, mangrove plantation during this season creates more opportunity to survive the trees and grows very well. The quality of the nursery raised mangrove saplings become high during this season. Even the mangroves seeds also become available during this entire season. BEDS do the plantation with the seed and seedlings. Plantation with seed was done at river bank side when there is availability of seed and when there is no possibility to avail seed then mangrove saplings is used for plantation.

This plantation season is most important season for BEDS to do the plantation activity at the river bank side. And So far BEDS restored almost 146 ha river bank area through mangrove plantation. BEDS aim to restore 350000 mangroves covering 70 ha area in the Sundarbans coastal region.
