On July 26, 2025, the Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) proudly celebrated the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem with heartfelt community participation and cultural expression. With generous support from the Ocean Community Empowerment and Nature (OCEAN) Grants Programme and the UK Government, this year’s observance brought together villagers, youth, cultural leaders, and interfaith religious representatives in a powerful display of unity and commitment to mangrove conservation. Held in the heart of the Sundarbans region, the event fused traditional knowledge and environmental awareness, reinforcing the community’s deep-rooted emotional and spiritual connection with the mangrove ecosystem.
The day’s celebrations were marked by vibrant cultural performances, storytelling, traditional songs, and rituals centered on the "Mother Tree"—a symbolic figure representing protection, life, and resilience. Community members honored the Mother Tree by dressing it in a sari and gamcha, evoking the image of a nurturing elder under whose shade all life finds refuge. Religious leaders from Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, and Christian faiths offered interfaith prayers for the well-being of the mangrove forests, highlighting spiritual unity in the face of environmental challenges. Participants shared heartfelt stories about their dependence on the Sundarbans for livelihood, identity, and safety. This gathering not only deepened public understanding of mangrove ecosystems but also inspired renewed collective action for restoration and conservation. With your continued support, BEDS will keep nurturing this emotional, cultural, and ecological bond between the people of coastal Bangladesh and the mangrove forests they call home.
