Maxwell, 24 years old.
Jifundishe Gives a Second Chance
Born in Mwadui Village in Kahama District, Shinyanga Region of northern Tanzania, Maxwell is the fourth of six children in his family. Life was never easy. His parents depended entirely on small-scale farming to provide food and basic needs for their children. Although they worked tirelessly, the income from seasonal agriculture was often uncertain and barely enough to support the family. Out of all six children, only two would eventually reach university.
Like many children in rural Tanzania, Maxwell understood from an early age that education was his best chance to create a better future.
In 2007, he began his primary education at Mwadui Primary School. Thanks to the Tanzanian government's decision to remove primary school fees, his journey through primary school was smooth despite his family's financial struggles. Maxwell worked hard and completed his primary education in 2013, earning a Grade C, which qualified him to continue to secondary school.
The following year, he was selected to join Nyalwelwe Secondary School. Excited about the opportunity, Maxwell arrived at school full of dreams and determination. However, those dreams were quickly threatened by reality.
After only two weeks, he was forced to leave school.
His parents simply could not afford the required school supplies, contributions, and other educational expenses. At the time, three children from the family were attending secondary school, making it impossible for the family to support all of them. With no other source of income besides unpredictable farming, Maxwell and his brothers had no choice but to drop out and return home.
For years, Maxwell remained at home. While many people might have given up on their dreams, he refused to let go of his. Deep inside, he still believed that one day he would continue his education.
That opportunity arrived in 2020.
A friend told him about the work being done by Jifundishe Organization, an organization dedicated to helping young people who had been denied educational opportunities. Inspired by what he heard, Maxwell made a bold decision. He planned to leave his village and travel to Arusha in search of a second chance.
In 2021, Maxwell joined Jifundishe as a Qualified Test (QT) student. For an entire year, he dedicated himself to studying and preparing for the national examinations. His hard work paid off. When the results were released, he passed successfully and qualified to continue to the next level of education.
Determined to keep moving forward, Maxwell joined the Private Candidate (PC) program at Jifundishe in 2022. Yet another obstacle stood in his path. Despite being academically prepared, he lacked the money needed to register for the national examinations. As a result, he spent two years in the program while searching for ways to raise the necessary funds.
Finally, in 2023, he managed to secure the examination fees and registered for the national exams. When the results were announced, Maxwell achieved another victory. He passed with Division III, earning the opportunity to pursue advanced-level studies.
In 2024, Maxwell enrolled in Advanced Level education through Jifundishe, specializing in History, Geography, and Kiswahili. Once again, he committed himself fully to his studies. One year later, in May 2025, he sat for the Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination.
The results brought yet another moment of celebration.
Maxwell passed with Division III.
For someone who had once dropped out of school and spent years without access to education, this achievement was more than an examination result. It was proof that persistence can overcome even the greatest obstacles.
Encouraged by his success, Maxwell applied to university later that year. To his joy, he was selected to join Saint Augustine University of Tanzania (SAUT), Arusha Campus, to pursue a Bachelor Degree in Tourism Management.
However, university education came with a new challenge: finances. His family's situation had not changed, and paying university fees was beyond their means. Recognizing his determination and potential, Jifundishe Organization stepped forward once again. The organization committed to supporting his university education for all three years of his degree program.
In October 2025, Maxwell officially began his university journey. Today, he is preparing to start his second year of studies, bringing him one step closer to achieving a dream that once seemed impossible.
Looking ahead, Maxwell hopes to establish his own tourism company after completing his degree. He is passionate about contributing to Tanzania's tourism industry and creating opportunities for others in his community. While searching for employment after graduation, he plans to continue working on his family's farm and engage in agriculture as a business.
When he reflects on his journey, Maxwell is filled with gratitude.
He is deeply thankful to Jifundishe Organization and to every donor whose generosity makes educational opportunities possible for young people like him. Their support transformed his life, turning years of disappointment into a future filled with possibility.
Maxwell's story stands as a powerful reminder that dreams may be delayed, but with determination, opportunity, and the support of caring people, they do not have to be abandoned.
"Education gave me a second chance. Jifundishe helped me turn my dream into reality, and I hope my story inspires others to never give up on theirs."
