Peace Winds is helping thousands of families who have fled across the border to Thailand for refuge after the February 2021 military coup against Myanmar's democratic government pushed the country into civil war. Programs provide a wide range of humanitarian support to parents and children who are now caught up in one of the world's worst refugee crises.
More than 5 million people have fled indiscriminate attacks, airstrikes, and the Myanmar junta's Conscription Law. Many have sought safety in Thai villages, but differences in language and culture, as well as legal limitations for migrants, make it difficult for them to integrate into society. Some parents make the difficult decision to send their children across the border unaccompanied where they often live in poor conditions at "migrant learning center" community schools.
With local partners, Peace Winds is helping families adjust to life in Thailand. A workshop and consultation program helps parents navigate a wide range of issues, from parenting and social challenges to civil services like healthcare and education. With your support, we have also helped migrant learning centers meet needs for growing numbers of students. This includes providing school supplies, hygiene and sanitary items, hot lunches, and support for school utility costs.
When their basic needs are met, children can stay focused on learning, and parents can focus on supporting their families. Myanmar's displaced people will need humanitarian support as long as the violence continues. Peace Winds aims to help families stay safe, set them up for long-term success, and lay the groundwork for recovery when the fighting ends.
