Addressing Anxiety and Depression Among Youth.

By Mbarara Rise | Project leader

Dear Donors

Here is A Report About Mental Health Support and Awareness Initiative

Background:
Marginalized communities, particularly LGBTQI+ individuals, face disproportionately high rates of anxiety, depression, and psychosocial stress due to systemic discrimination, social exclusion, violence, and limited access to supportive care. Despite the growing mental health crisis, stigma and lack of culturally competent services continue to hinder affected individuals from seeking help.

Project Summary:
This project was designed to confront the growing burden of anxiety and depression within marginalized populations by taking a community-centered and trauma-informed approach to mental health. The initiative focused on:

  1. Raising Awareness
Through community dialogues, peer-led workshops, and public information campaigns, we increased understanding of mental health issues, normalized conversations around depression and anxiety, and challenged deep-rooted stigma.

  2. Providing Access to Mental Health Support
The project created referral pathways and safe access points to mental health professionals trained in inclusive, non-discriminatory care. We also piloted community-based peer counseling and support groups that provided safe spaces for individuals to speak openly without judgment.

  3. Building Local Capacity
We trained over 30 community health workers, peer educators, and frontline staff in psychological first aid and mental health literacy, equipping them to identify distress signs and make referrals.

Key Results:

  • Over 96 individuals reached through mental health awareness campaigns.

  • 57 individuals received one-on-one mental health support or referrals to clinical care.

  • Formation of 3 peer support groups for LGBTQI+ youth and other vulnerable members.

  • Reported decrease in self-stigma and increased willingness to seek help among participants.

Kind Regards,

Programs Leader.
