Most mothers in low- and middle-income countries such as Kenya experience mental health problems yet they lack the much needed mental health care. Despite the high burden of poor mental health in low-resourced settings, mental health care is still lacking. Communities Mental Wellness endeavors to provide low-cost mental health intervention package to young women in rural Kilifi, Kenya. The program aims to build awareness and grounding during stressful moments; notice and name difficult thoughts; identify and act on values; build compassion and kindness and accept and live with difficult thoughts. These skills help young mothers take proactive steps to encourage positive feelings and be responsive and sensitive caregivers.
However, this program is yet to kick off due to a lack of funding. We have received a kind donation of $230. We still appeal to donors to help us reach our target to enable us to provide mental health intervention in these settings. Meanwhile, Communities Mental Wellness continues raising mental health awareness in rural communities. We offer a free mental health screening test through our interactive website. Additionally, we continue to provide mental health education materials on our website. Our team is working to ensure we engage different stakeholders to start mental health interventions in the community.
