2022 Second trimester Nutrition Report

By Pim van den Hoven | Head of Social Projects of Mision Huascaran

Dear donors, we would like to express our most profound and sincere gratitude for your contributions. Thanks to your continued support, our Nutrition Program continues to thrive obtaining impressive results, despite the difficult global economic landscape and the unstable political situation in Peru. These are challenging times for everyone, however remaining united and commitmented to the cause we are confident we will overcome the current situation.

Nutrition program progress report up to September 2022

Nutrition improvements

  1. The anti anemia Bakery at the Amashca school has been functioning for five full months now, providing daily portions of iron enriched bread to +700 children and pregnant women from Utupampa, Huashcao, Canchapampa, Congar, Punyan, Amashca, Pisca and Pariaqaqa townships. Each bread provides between 80-90% of the daily dietary iron requirement!!! Up to september 2022, we have distributed +150.000 breads to our beneficiaries.
  2. In July, the first acceptability test of the organoleptic properties of the iron enriched bread was performed under the target audience of vulnerable children and pregnant women. Our in-house created bread formulas received a high acceptancy rate.
  3. Milk (100s of cans) and fish (4 TM) were handed out for free thanks to our corporate allies benefitting thousands of rural vulnerable Andean families, providing them with nutrient rich complementary foods.
  4. Mid july the Egg Laying Henhouse Project in Pariaqaqa was inaugurated. Since the beginning of August 2022, 60 children receive an egg a day as a complementary protein source in their diet. The egg-a-day provide the children with 7 grams of additional protein intake.
  5. Personal higiene kits were handed out to all +700 children in the Nutrition Program in july.
  6. We continued the capacitation training of our Guiding Mothers, whom are leading figures in their communities, whom support with the bread distribution, our various other nutrition oriented activities and also provide guidance to other members of their respective communities.
  7. Various demonstration sessions were organized and the Nutrition Program participated in the Mision Huascaran´s Health Campaigns during the third quarter with dozens of benefitted participants and patients.
  8. During the quarter, with the help of our Guiding Mothers, regular visits to dozens of family and school vegtable gardens were realized, these visits to different schools and towns were also used to monitor the consumption of the iron enriched bread by the children and pregnant women.

To expand our reach, we require all the help you can give through the GlobalGiving platform.  In a world full of challenges for our societies; and well nutured children are the hope for a bright future.

We thank you for all the help you’ve given and will continue to give in the future.
